The Customer's Situation
Puan Noraini binti Ahmad runs a small tailoring and alteration business from a ground-floor shoplot in Kepong. The shop is about 500 sqft — a typical single-storey shoplot with a dropped ceiling. For the past 12 years, she'd been using two old window aircond units to cool the space.
The problems had been piling up. Both window units were noisy — her customers could barely hear themselves talk over the rattling compressors. One unit had started leaking water onto the fabric display below. And despite running both units all day, the shop was never evenly cool — the area near the window units was freezing cold, but the fitting room at the back stayed warm.
"My customers complain about the heat when they're trying on clothes in the fitting room," Puan Noraini explained. "And the noise is embarrassing. Some of my regulars even asked me when I'm going to fix my aircond."
She had heard from a friend that ceiling cassette airconds distribute air more evenly, and asked us to come take a look at her shoplot.
Existing Problems
- Two 12-year-old window aircond units — extremely noisy, one leaking water
- Uneven cooling — front area cold, back area warm despite both units running
- High electricity usage — old non-inverter window units running at full power all day
- Poor aesthetics — bulky window units blocking natural light and looking outdated
- Fitting room at the back of shop consistently too warm for customers
Our Recommendation
After assessing the shop layout, ceiling structure, and cooling requirements, our team recommended replacing both window units with a single Daikin 3.0HP inverter ceiling cassette unit. Here's why:
- One cassette unit can cover the entire 500 sqft space — the 4-way air distribution would eliminate hot spots, cooling the fitting room just as well as the front counter
- Inverter technology would cut electricity consumption by an estimated 30-40% compared to the two old non-inverter window units combined
- Noise reduction — a modern cassette unit operates at around 33 dB, virtually silent compared to the rattling window units
- Aesthetics — removing the window units would free up the windows for natural light, and the cassette grille sits flush in the existing dropped ceiling
Puan Noraini initially worried about the cost being much higher than simply replacing the window units. But when we broke down the numbers — lower TNB bill, zero repair costs, quieter operation, and better customer experience — she decided it was a worthwhile investment for her business. Understanding the differences between cassette and wall-mount units helped her make a confident decision.
The Installation Process
We scheduled the installation for a Monday — Puan Noraini's day off. Our installation team of three arrived at 8am.
Work Completed
- Removed both old window aircond units and sealed the wall openings
- Surveyed ceiling void for optimal cassette placement — centre of the shop for maximum coverage
- Cut ceiling opening and installed mounting frame secured to concrete slab above
- Hoisted and secured Daikin 3.0HP inverter cassette unit into ceiling
- Ran new copper refrigerant pipes (R32 gas) through ceiling void to rear wall — 15ft pipe run
- Installed new condensation drain line with proper gradient to external drainage
- Mounted new outdoor condenser unit at rear of shoplot with anti-vibration rubber feet
- Ran dedicated 20A electrical circuit from DB board to cassette unit
- Performed vacuum, leak test, and gas charging
- Full commissioning and performance test
- Installed wireless remote control receiver and provided infrared remote
The Tricky Part: Pipe Routing
The most challenging aspect of this job was routing the copper pipes. The cassette unit sits in the centre of the ceiling, but the outdoor unit could only be placed at the rear of the shoplot (the front faces a busy road with no space for a condenser). This meant a 15ft pipe run through the ceiling void — longer than the typical 10ft residential installation.
Our team used insulated copper pipes throughout, properly secured every 4ft with pipe brackets to prevent sagging, and ensured the drainage pipe had consistent downward gradient — essential for preventing water pooling that could lead to leaks down the line.
Sealing the Old Window Openings
After removing the window units, we sealed both wall openings with cement board and applied waterproof sealant. Puan Noraini plans to have her handyman plaster and paint over them later. For now, the openings are fully sealed and weather-tight.
Results
- Even cooling throughout: The entire 500 sqft shop, including the fitting room, cools to 24°C within 20 minutes — no more hot spots
- Dramatically quieter: Customers and Puan Noraini noticed immediately — conversations are no longer drowned out by aircond noise
- Lower TNB bill: First month's electricity bill dropped by approximately RM120 compared to running two window units
- Better aesthetics: Windows now let in natural light, and the ceiling cassette is barely noticeable — just a clean white grille
- Customer comfort: No more complaints about the fitting room being warm
Pricing Breakdown
- Daikin 3.0HP Inverter Ceiling Cassette Unit (?"FCV series): RM3,200
- Installation labour (including ceiling work, pipe run, electrical): RM1,200
- Additional copper pipe (15ft run — 5ft beyond standard): RM200
- Window unit removal and wall sealing: RM200
- Total: RM4,800
While RM4,800 is significantly more than replacing two window units (which would have cost about RM1,500-2,000 total), the long-term savings in electricity alone — approximately RM120/month — means the cassette upgrade pays for itself in about 2.5 years. Plus, Puan Noraini gets dramatically better cooling, aesthetics, and customer experience.
Customer Feedback
"I should have done this years ago! The shop is so much more comfortable now. My fitting room is finally cool, and customers keep commenting on how nice the shop feels. Best investment I've made for my business. The team was professional, finished everything in one day, and the shop was ready to open the next morning. Thank you Total Aircond!"
