The Customer's Situation

Mr. Raymond Ong ran a small accounting firm from a double-storey shoplot in SS2, Petaling Jaya. His ground floor office — about 800 sqft — had three non-inverter aircond units: two York 1.5HP and one Panasonic 2.0HP, all installed 9 years ago when he first moved in.

His monthly TNB bill had been climbing steadily — from about RM800/month three years ago to over RM1,200/month now. The airconds were running 10 hours daily, 6 days a week. His staff complained they weren't cooling well, so they kept turning the temperature down to 18-20°C, which made the bills even worse.

Raymond called us for a quote on servicing all three units. After our technician inspected them, we had an honest conversation: the units were 9 years old, non-inverter, losing efficiency, and probably not worth investing in major repairs. We recommended replacement with inverter units instead.

Situation Before

  • 3 non-inverter aircond units, 9 years old (2x York 1.5HP, 1x Panasonic 2.0HP)
  • Running 10 hours/day, 6 days/week
  • Monthly TNB bill: RM1,200+ (up from RM800 three years ago)
  • Poor cooling — staff setting temperature to 18-20°C just to feel comfortable
  • Units showing signs of age: one unit leaking, another making noise

The Upgrade Plan

We recommended replacing all three units with Daikin inverter models:

  • 2x Daikin 1.5HP FTKF Series Inverter (replacing the York units)
  • 1x Daikin 2.0HP FTKF Series Inverter (replacing the Panasonic unit)

As detailed in our guide on aircond electricity consumption, the difference between inverter and non-inverter becomes dramatic at 10 hours daily usage.

Installation Work

  • Removed 3 old non-inverter units (indoor and outdoor) and disposed of properly
  • Installed 2x Daikin FTKF35B 1.5HP inverter units
  • Installed 1x Daikin FTKF50B 2.0HP inverter unit
  • Reused existing pipe runs where possible (saved on piping costs)
  • New outdoor units mounted on existing brackets (reinforced where needed)
  • Full vacuum, leak test, and gas charging for all 3 units
  • Electrical connections checked and updated where needed

Results — The Numbers Tell the Story

  • Cooling performance: Dramatically improved — staff comfortable at 24°C (vs 18-20°C with old units)
  • TNB bill month 1 after upgrade: RM780
  • TNB bill month 2: RM820
  • TNB bill month 3: RM790
  • Average monthly saving: RM380-420/month
  • Annual projected saving: RM4,500-5,000
  • Payback period: Approximately 13 months

The savings came from two factors: the inverter technology itself (30-40% more efficient) and the ability to set a higher temperature (24°C vs 18°C) because the new units actually cool effectively.

Cost Breakdown

  • 2x Daikin 1.5HP FTKF Inverter (supply): RM1,500 × 2 = RM3,000
  • 1x Daikin 2.0HP FTKF Inverter (supply): RM1,800
  • Installation (3 units, reusing pipe runs): RM600
  • Total: RM5,400

Customer Feedback

"I was spending RM1,200 a month on TNB and the office still wasn't cool enough. After replacing with Daikin inverters, my bill dropped to under RM800 and the office is actually comfortable. The investment paid for itself in just over a year. Should have done this sooner."
