The Customer's Situation

Mr. and Mrs. Lim Kah Wai had recently purchased a 20-year-old double-storey terrace house in Taman Putra Prima, Puchong. The previous owner had left behind an ancient York 1.5HP non-inverter aircond in the master bedroom that was, frankly, on its last legs. It was noisy, barely cold, and probably hadn't been serviced in years.

After getting the house renovated, the Lims decided to replace the old unit entirely with a brand new Daikin inverter. They'd done their research and settled on the Daikin FTKF Series 2.0HP inverter — a popular choice among Malaysian homeowners for its reliability and energy efficiency.

Mrs. Lim contacted us to handle the installation. She'd already purchased the unit from a dealer, so our job was purely installation — remove the old unit and install the new one.

Why 2HP and Not 1.5HP?

The master bedroom was approximately 200 sq ft with a standard 10-foot ceiling. Normally, 1.5HP would be sufficient. However, the room faced west with a large window, and the Lims liked to keep the attached bathroom door open (adding another 40 sq ft of space to cool). Based on proper HP sizing guidelines, 2.0HP was the right call — the west-facing window alone added enough heat load to justify the upgrade.

Pre-Installation Challenges

  • Old unit used R22 refrigerant (now obsolete) — copper pipes not compatible with new R32 unit
  • Existing pipe hole in wall was only 2 inches — needed widening to 3 inches for new pipe bundle
  • Old outdoor unit bracket was rusted and not rated for the heavier new outdoor unit
  • Electrical wiring to the old unit was only 1.5mm² — new Daikin 2HP requires 2.5mm² with dedicated MCB

Installation Process

Our installation team — led by technician Amirul with his assistant Faizal — arrived at 8:30am. Here's how the day went:

Work Completed

  • Safely removed old York unit (indoor + outdoor) and disposed of old R22 refrigerant properly
  • Installed new stainless steel outdoor bracket rated for 80kg
  • Mounted indoor unit with wall plate and spirit-level alignment
  • Ran new 1/4" + 3/8" copper pipes (5 metres) with proper insulation wrapping
  • Installed new drainage hose with proper downward gradient
  • Ran new 2.5mm² electrical cable from DB box with dedicated 20A MCB
  • Flared all copper connections using Ridgid flaring tool — torqued to Daikin specifications
  • Performed nitrogen pressure test at 400 PSI for 30 minutes — zero leaks
  • Triple vacuum evacuation using 2-stage vacuum pump
  • Released pre-charged R32 refrigerant from outdoor unit
  • Full commissioning test — cooling performance, drainage, electrical, noise level

The Details That Matter

Why new copper pipes? The old pipes were designed for R22 refrigerant which operates at lower pressure. R32 (used in the new Daikin) operates at significantly higher pressure. Using old R22 pipes with R32 risks leaks at the joints and potential pipe failure. We always recommend new pipes when changing from R22 to R32 or R410A.

Why a dedicated MCB? The old unit was connected to a shared circuit with other bedroom power outlets. A 2HP inverter aircond draws up to 9 amps during startup. Sharing a circuit risks tripping the MCB when the aircond and other appliances run simultaneously. A dedicated 20A MCB from the distribution board ensures reliable power supply and is actually required by electrical safety standards.

Proper pipe insulation: Amirul used 3/4" thick Aeroflex insulation on both the suction and liquid lines. Cheap installers sometimes use thin insulation or skip insulating the liquid line entirely. In Malaysia's humid climate, insufficient insulation leads to condensation on the pipes, which drips down the wall and gets mistaken for an aircond leak.

Results

Installation was completed by 1:30pm — about 5 hours total. The commissioning test showed excellent results:

  • Air outlet temperature: 10°C (brand new unit performing at peak)
  • Room cooling time: From 33°C to 24°C in approximately 12 minutes
  • Noise level: Indoor unit barely audible on low fan speed (19 dB rated)
  • Drainage: Water flowing freely through the drain hose — no leaks at any connection point
  • Electrical: Stable amp draw, MCB holding without tripping during startup surge

Mrs. Lim was particularly pleased with how quiet the new unit was compared to the old York. "I can barely hear it running," she said. "The old one sounded like a truck."

Pricing Breakdown

Note: The Lims purchased the aircond unit separately. Our charges covered installation only:

  • Removal and disposal of old unit: RM150
  • New outdoor bracket (stainless steel): RM120
  • Copper piping (5m, 1/4" + 3/8") with insulation: RM350
  • Drainage hose and fittings: RM50
  • Electrical wiring + dedicated 20A MCB: RM280
  • Installation labour (mounting, piping, brazing, vacuum, commissioning): RM650
  • Wall core drilling (widening pipe hole): RM80
  • Total installation: RM1,680
  • Daikin FTKF50B 2HP unit (customer-supplied): ~RM2,800 incl. unit

Tips for Homeowners Installing New Aircond

  1. Don't reuse old R22 copper pipes with a new R32 or R410A unit. The pressure difference makes it risky.
  2. Insist on a dedicated MCB for units 1.5HP and above. Shared circuits cause problems.
  3. Ask your installer to do a nitrogen pressure test before vacuuming. This catches leaks before refrigerant is added.
  4. Check the drainage gradient. The drain hose must slope downward continuously. Any upward section will trap water and cause leaking.

Choosing the right aircond for your room is just as important as proper installation. If you need help with aircond installation, we serve all of Puchong, PJ, KL, and Selangor.

This customer chose Daikin, which consistently ranks among the best aircond brands in Malaysia for reliability and energy efficiency. It's a popular choice for terrace house installations.

Customer Feedback

"Amirul and Faizal were very professional. They explained why we needed new pipes and a dedicated MCB — I didn't know about these things. The installation was clean, they covered the furniture and cleaned up after. Most importantly, the aircond is super cold and super quiet. Worth every sen."
