The Customer's Situation

Puan Farah lives in a flat in Sentul with her husband and 7-year-old daughter Aisyah. For the past three months, Aisyah had been coughing and sneezing every night at bedtime. The paediatrician checked for common allergies and found elevated dust mite and mould sensitivity. He asked Puan Farah: "When was the last time you cleaned your aircond?"

Puan Farah couldn't remember. The two Panasonic units in the flat had been running daily for 5 years with only occasional filter rinses — never a professional cleaning, and certainly never a chemical wash.

When she peeled open the front panel of the bedroom unit, she found black mould spots visible even without a flashlight. The sour, vinegar-like smell that she'd been dismissing as "just how old airconds smell" was actually the sign of a serious mould colony.

What We Found

When our technician Zainal opened both units, the contamination was extensive. The bedroom unit's evaporator coil was covered in a fuzzy layer of black and green mould. The drain pan had a biofilm of bacteria. The blower fan blades were coated in a sticky combination of mould, dust, and moisture.

Every time the aircond ran, it was blowing mould spores directly at the sleeping child — exactly the trigger for her allergic symptoms. For more on health-related aircond issues, see our articles on vinegar-smelling aircond and fixing bad aircond smells.

The Deep Clean

Zainal performed a full chemical wash on both units. The chemical solution — a professional-grade coil cleaner with antimicrobial properties — was sprayed liberally on all contaminated surfaces. The solution kills mould and bacteria on contact and breaks down the organic buildup.

The runoff water from both units was dark brown with visible mould fragments. Zainal also applied an anti-mould treatment to the coil surfaces — a coating that inhibits future mould growth for 3-6 months.

Customer Feedback

"I feel terrible that my daughter was breathing mould for months and I didn't realise. The aircond looked fine from outside. After the chemical wash, the difference in air quality is unbelievable — no more smell, no more coughing. I've set a reminder for 3-monthly servicing. Never again."
