The Customer's Situation
Puan Farah Hanim and her husband Encik Amirul lived in a corner-lot semi-D in Taman Bukit Jalil. All four of their Daikin wall-mounted airconds — 3 bedrooms and the living room — had developed a terrible musty, sour smell over the past few months. The smell was worst when the aircond first turned on and would linger for 10-15 minutes.
They'd had the units cleaned by another company two months ago, but the smell came back within two weeks. Puan Farah was especially concerned because their youngest child, 2-year-old Aisyah, had developed persistent sneezing and a runny nose that their paediatrician attributed to indoor allergens.
When they contacted us, we suspected the previous cleaning had been superficial and that deeper contamination — likely mould — was the root cause. We recommended a chemical overhaul rather than another regular clean.
Issues Found
- All 4 units producing strong musty/sour smell when running
- Black mould visible on blower fans and inside unit housings
- Evaporator coils had mould growth between fins — not removed by previous cleaning
- Drain pans had thick biofilm (slimy biological growth)
- Previous regular cleaning 2 months ago did not resolve the smell
Why Regular Cleaning Failed
Regular cleaning and even standard chemical wash spray the coil while it's still mounted inside the unit. This is effective for dust and light grime, but black mould that has penetrated deep between coil fins and embedded itself in the blower fan cannot be fully removed without disassembly.
The blower fan in particular is a mould magnet — it's always damp from condensation, it's dark inside the unit, and the fan blades have many crevices where mould colonies establish themselves. You need to remove the fan and soak it in anti-fungal solution to truly eradicate the mould.
As explained in our chemical overhaul guide, this level of contamination requires component-level disassembly and soaking — not just surface spraying.
The Overhaul Process
Work Completed (per unit × 4)
- Full disassembly of indoor units — front panel, filters, louvers, blower fan, drain pan removed
- Evaporator coil sprayed with anti-fungal chemical cleaner and soaked for 30 minutes
- Blower fan soaked in chemical solution — scrubbed to remove deeply embedded mould
- Drain pan soaked and sanitised — biofilm completely removed
- Unit housing wiped down with anti-mould solution
- All components rinsed with pressurised water
- Drain pipes flushed and treated with anti-algae solution
- Full reassembly, function test, and 30-minute run test
The Mould Situation Was Severe
When our technician team (we sent two technicians given the 4-unit job) opened the first unit — the master bedroom — the extent of mould was shocking even to our experienced team. The blower fan blades were almost entirely black with mould. The space between the coil and the housing had visible mould colonies. And the drain pan had a thick layer of green-black biofilm.
We showed Puan Farah photos before cleaning. She was horrified — this was the air her family had been breathing, including her 2-year-old daughter. Mould spores are a known trigger for respiratory issues, allergies, and asthma, which explained little Aisyah's symptoms.
Understanding the link between bad smells and health risks, as covered in our musty aircond smell guide, is crucial for families with young children.
Results
- Smell: Completely eliminated — all four units blow clean, fresh air
- Cooling: Noticeably improved — rooms cool faster with stronger airflow
- Air quality: Within two weeks, Puan Farah reported that Aisyah's sneezing had significantly reduced
- Visual: Blower fans and coils restored to near-original condition
Cost Breakdown
- Chemical overhaul × 4 units: RM300 × 4 = RM1,200
- Anti-mould treatment (included): RM0 extra
- Total: RM1,200
Customer Feedback
"The photos of the mould inside our aircond units were terrifying. No wonder my daughter was always sneezing. The overhaul made a world of difference — the smell is completely gone and the air feels so much cleaner. We should have done this sooner instead of wasting money on the regular cleaning that didn't work."
