The Three Main Types
R22 (Freon)
The old-school gas used in airconds before 2015. Being phased out globally by 2030. Price has doubled in 5 years to RM80-150 per top-up. High environmental impact with ozone depletion potential.
R410A (Puron)
Standard from 2012-2020. Readily available at RM80-120 per top-up. No ozone depletion but high global warming potential (GWP 2,088). Being gradually phased down in favour of R32.
R32 (Current Standard)
The newest and most eco-friendly option. Most new airconds from Daikin, Panasonic, and Midea use R32. Cost: RM70-110 per top-up. GWP of just 675 — one-third of R410A.
⚠️ Critical Warning
You CANNOT mix gas types or use the wrong gas. R22, R410A, and R32 operate at different pressures and are NOT interchangeable. Check your aircond's nameplate sticker for the correct type. Using wrong gas can destroy the compressor.
R32 vs R410A: Which Is Better?
For new installations, R32 wins on every metric: better energy efficiency, lower environmental impact, requires 30% less gas by weight, and simpler to handle (single-component vs blend). The only caveat is R32's mild flammability (A2L), but modern units are designed with safety features to manage this.
Can You Convert R22 to R32?
Some technicians offer this conversion since R32 operates at similar pressures to R22. It can work but is NOT manufacturer-recommended and may void warranty.
