New Aircond Not Cold Enough? Common Installation Mistakes

You just spent RM1,500-3,000 on a brand new aircond with professional installation. It's been running for a week, but the room doesn't feel cold enough. What went wrong?

In many cases, the unit itself is perfectly fine. The problem lies in how it was installed. Here are the most common installation mistakes.

Mistake #1: Undersized Unit

The contractor recommends a 1.0HP unit for a room that needs 1.5HP — either wrong measurement or quoting cheaper to win the job. In Malaysia's climate, add capacity for west-facing rooms, top floors, large windows, and high ceilings.

Mistake #2: Insufficient Vacuum Before Gas Charge

Before charging with refrigerant, the installer must vacuum the pipes for 15-20 minutes minimum. Many rush this step — some skip it entirely. Result: moisture and air trapped in the system, reducing cooling by 10-30%.

Mistake #3: Incorrect Copper Pipe Length

Excessive pipe runs, bends, and vertical rises all reduce cooling. Each unit has a maximum pipe length (15-20m). For pipe issues, see our copper pipe guide.

Mistake #4: Poor Outdoor Unit Placement

Condensers in enclosed spaces with poor ventilation can't reject heat properly. In Malaysian condos, tiny utility ledges with stacked units are a constant problem.

Mistake #5: Drain Pipe Errors

Insufficient slope, kinks, or missing P-traps cause water backup and leaking. We see drain issues in 30% of budget installations.

Mistake #6: Poor Flare Connections

Crooked or cracked flares create slow gas leaks. The aircond works fine initially, then gradually loses cooling over months. Proper flaring requires dedicated tools — makeshift methods create imperfect seals.

🔍 Red Flags During Installation

• No vacuum pump used (or run for less than 5 minutes)
• No pressure/leak test after connecting pipes
• Pipe bends made by hand without a bender
• Insulation not taped at joints
• No test run before leaving

What to Do If Your New Aircond Isn't Cold

  1. Check basics: doors/windows closed, correct room size for HP rating
  2. Measure outlet temperature (should be 8-14°C)
  3. Call installer back — workmanship warranty should cover this
  4. Get a second opinion if the original installer can't fix it

Don't accept "just wait for it to break in." A new aircond should cool optimally from day one. For proper aircond installation in USJ or anywhere in KL/Selangor, we do it right the first time.

Another frequent issue is installing the wrong HP for the room. If the installer recommended a 1.0HP for a large master bedroom, it will never cool properly regardless of the brand. Use our calculator for choosing the right HP for your room size.
