Professional aircond servicing every 3-4 months is essential — but what about the weeks in between? There's quite a lot you can do yourself to keep your aircond running efficiently, reduce electricity consumption, and prevent problems before they start.
None of these tasks require technical skills or special tools. They're simple habits that make a real difference to your aircond's performance and lifespan.
1. Clean or Wash Your Filters Every 2 Weeks
This is the single most impactful thing you can do. The air filter is the first line of defence against dust entering your aircond's internal components. When it gets clogged, airflow drops dramatically — your room takes longer to cool, your compressor works harder, and your TNB bill goes up.
Cleaning is simple:
- Open the front panel of your indoor unit (lift it up — most snap open easily)
- Slide out the mesh filters
- Rinse under running water — use a soft brush if there's stubborn dust
- Let them dry completely before reinstalling
In dusty environments — ground floor units near roads, homes with pets, or areas with ongoing construction — you may need to clean filters weekly.
2. Keep the Outdoor Unit Clear
The outdoor condenser unit needs adequate airflow to release heat. If it's surrounded by plants, boxes, laundry, or other obstructions, it can't breathe properly. This forces the compressor to work harder and increases electricity consumption by 10-20%.
Maintain at least 30cm of clearance on all sides of the outdoor unit. Periodically check for leaves, cobwebs, and debris caught in the condenser fins. You can gently brush these off with a soft broom — but avoid bending the delicate aluminium fins.
3. Run Your Aircond Regularly
If you have an aircond that rarely gets used — perhaps in a guest room or spare bedroom — run it for at least 15-20 minutes once a week. This keeps the compressor lubricated, prevents seals from drying out, and circulates the refrigerant through the system.
Airconds that sit unused for months are more likely to develop problems when you finally turn them on — including refrigerant leaks from dried-out seals and compressor starting issues.
4. Check for Water Leaks
Inspect the area around your indoor unit regularly. Water stains on the wall below the unit, dripping from the unit, or puddles on the floor are signs of drainage problems. Catch these early and you avoid water damage to walls, ceilings, and furniture.
Common causes include clogged drain pipes (from dust and algae buildup) and a misaligned drain pan. If you spot a leak, it's best to call a professional for proper servicing.
One sign that your self-maintenance isn't enough is when your unit starts developing a musty or bad smell — that means bacteria and mould have grown beyond what filter cleaning can address, and you need a professional chemical wash.
5. Use the Right Temperature Settings
Running your aircond at 16°C when 24°C would be comfortable doesn't just waste electricity — it puts unnecessary strain on the compressor. Consistent operation at extreme low temperatures accelerates wear on the compressor, fan motor, and other mechanical components.
Set your aircond between 23-25°C for optimal efficiency and comfort. Use sleep mode at night and timers to avoid running the unit longer than necessary.
6. Listen for Unusual Sounds
Your aircond has a normal operating sound — a steady hum from the compressor and gentle whoosh from the fan. Learn what normal sounds like so you can catch changes early:
- Rattling or vibrating: Loose screws, panels, or debris in the unit
- Clicking repeatedly: Possible electrical relay or PCB issue
- Grinding or squealing: Fan motor bearing wear — needs attention soon
- Bubbling or gurgling: Refrigerant issue or drainage problem
- Loud buzzing from outdoor unit: Compressor or contactor issue
7. Keep the Indoor Unit Clean
Wipe down the exterior of the indoor unit monthly with a damp cloth. Dust that settles on the louvers and air deflectors gets blown into the room every time the aircond runs. This is especially important for families with allergies or young children.
Don't use chemical cleaners or spray water directly into the unit — just a damp microfiber cloth on the outer surfaces is sufficient.
8. Check Your Electrical Connections
Once every few months, visually inspect the power plug and cable for your aircond. Look for signs of discolouration, melting, or loose connections. A damaged power cable or overheating plug point is a fire hazard that should be addressed immediately by an electrician.
📅 Simple Maintenance Schedule
Every 2 weeks: Clean air filters
Monthly: Wipe down indoor unit exterior, check for water leaks
Every 3 months: Clear outdoor unit area, check for unusual sounds
Every 3-4 months: Professional servicing by qualified technicians
Annually: Full inspection including gas pressure check and electrical assessment
When DIY Isn't Enough
These maintenance tips help between services, but they don't replace professional servicing. A technician does things you can't do at home: high-pressure coil cleaning, gas pressure checks, amperage testing, drainage system flushing, and electrical connection tightening.
Neglecting filter cleaning is one of the most common reasons airconds develop frozen coils. The restricted airflow from a dirty filter causes the evaporator temperature to drop below freezing — an easily preventable problem.
