Proper wiring is critical for aircond safety. Wrong wiring causes tripping, fire hazards, and warranty voidance.
Basic Requirements
Every aircond needs a dedicated circuit — separate MCB, own cable, not shared with other appliances. Compressor inrush current is 3-6x normal running current.
MCB & Cable Sizing
- 1.0-1.5HP: 16A MCB, 2.5mm² cable
- 2.0-2.5HP: 20A MCB, 4.0mm² cable
- 3.0HP: 25-32A MCB, 4.0-6.0mm² cable
- 5.0HP: 32A MCB, 6.0mm² cable (often 3-phase)
⚠️ Safety Note
Always check your unit's installation manual for specific requirements. A licensed electrician should verify the final specification.
Single-Phase vs Three-Phase
Most homes: single-phase (240V), adequate up to 3HP. For 5HP+ or multiple large units: three-phase (415V) required. TNB upgrade costs RM2,000-5,000.
Common Wiring Mistakes
- Undersized cable: Overheats, melts insulation, fire risk — most dangerous mistake
- Shared circuit: Random MCB tripping from combined overload
- No earth wire: Shock hazard from outdoor unit faults
- Wrong MCB rating: Too small = nuisance tripping, too large = no protection
- Loose connections: Generate heat, cause arcing and fire
Never Use Extension Cords
Airconds must be hardwired to dedicated circuits through isolator switches. Never run from standard 13A plugs or extension cords — safety and warranty requirement.
Factory & Commercial
Industrial spaces in Semenyih and similar areas need: 3-phase supply, industrial MCBs, armoured cables, phase balancing, and PE certification. Proper installation starts with proper electrical prep.
Bottom Line
Use dedicated circuits, correct MCBs and cables, and licensed electricians. Electrical work costs RM200-500 per point residential — but it's the foundation of safe aircond operation.
