Aircond Smell Bad or Musty? Here's Why & How to Fix It

You switch on the aircond after coming home from work, and instead of a refreshing blast of cool air, you get hit with a wave of musty, stale, or downright foul-smelling air. If this sounds familiar, you're not alone — smelly aircond is one of the top five complaints we hear from Malaysian homeowners.

The good news is that a bad-smelling aircond almost always has a fixable cause. The bad news is that ignoring it doesn't just affect your comfort — it can affect your health, especially for family members with allergies, asthma, or sensitive airways.

Why Does Your Aircond Smell Bad?

Your aircond doesn't just cool air — it dehumidifies it. The evaporator coil inside the indoor unit is always cold and wet during operation, which means it's the perfect breeding ground for mould, bacteria, and mildew. In Malaysia's tropical climate with 70-90% humidity year-round, this problem is amplified dramatically.

Here are the most common causes of aircond smell, from most to least common:

1. Mould and Mildew on the Evaporator Coil

This is the number one cause and accounts for roughly 70% of smelly aircond cases we handle. The evaporator coil — that big, finned aluminium component behind the filter — stays wet whenever the aircond is running. When you turn the aircond off, the residual moisture sits on the coil in a warm, dark environment. Perfect conditions for mould.

Over months, a thin biofilm of mould and bacteria builds up on the coil surface. Every time the aircond runs, air passes over this biofilm and carries mould spores and musty odours directly into your room. The smell is usually described as "musty," "damp," or "like old socks."

2. Stagnant Water in the Drain Pan

The drain pan sits below the evaporator coil and catches condensation water, which then flows out through the drain hose. If the drain is partially blocked or the pan has developed a slimy biofilm, the water becomes stagnant and starts to smell — like a clogged drain in your kitchen.

For extreme cases where mould has penetrated deep into the barrel fan and drain pan, a standard chemical wash won't cut it — you need a full chemical overhaul that involves completely disassembling the indoor unit.

3. Dirty Blower Fan

The cylindrical blower fan (also called a cross-flow fan) pushes air through the evaporator coil and into your room. Over time, dust, moisture, and biological growth accumulate on the fan blades. Since the fan is always in the moist environment behind the coil, it's another prime location for mould growth.

4. Dead Animals or Insects

This is more common than you'd think in Malaysian homes. Geckos (cicak), cockroaches, and even small rats can crawl into the indoor unit through gaps in the casing. If they die inside the unit — near the warm motor or behind the drain pan — the decomposition smell gets blown directly into your room. This produces a sharp, rotten smell quite different from the musty mould smell.

5. Cigarette Smoke or Cooking Odours Absorbed

Aircond filters and coils absorb airborne chemicals over time. If someone smokes indoors or if heavy cooking smells (like fried fish or sambal) are present regularly, these odours get trapped in the filter media and coil surface and re-released when the aircond runs.

How to Fix a Smelly Aircond

Quick Fix: Clean or Replace the Filters

Start here. Remove the front panel filters and wash them with warm water and mild detergent. If they're reusable mesh filters, scrub gently with a soft brush and let them dry completely before reinstalling. If they're disposable, replace them.

Bad smells often come with another symptom — water dripping inside the room. A clogged drain pan (the same place mould grows) causes both the smell and the water overflow.

This might solve the problem if the smell is only from surface dust and dirt on the filters. But if the smell persists after cleaning the filters, the problem is deeper — in the coil, drain, or blower.

Standard Cleaning

A standard aircond cleaning service involves opening the indoor unit, high-pressure water washing the evaporator coil and blower fan, and flushing the drain system. This removes surface-level dust, dirt, and light biological growth.

For mild musty smells that have only recently appeared, a standard cleaning is usually sufficient. Cost: RM60-80 per unit.

Chemical Wash — For Persistent or Severe Smells

If the smell is strong, persistent, or returns within weeks of a standard cleaning, you need a chemical wash. This involves disassembling the indoor unit more extensively and soaking the evaporator coil and blower fan in a specialised alkaline cleaning solution that kills mould and bacteria at the root.

Chemical wash is the gold standard for eliminating persistent smells. The chemical solution penetrates deep into the coil fins where water pressure alone can't reach, killing the biofilm that causes the odour. Cost: RM150-250 per unit.

What If There's a Dead Animal?

If the smell is sharp and rotten rather than musty, the technician will need to open the unit and physically locate and remove the source. After removal, the entire unit should be chemically washed and disinfected. The smell should disappear within 24 hours once the source is removed and the unit is cleaned.

🏥 Health Warning: Don't Ignore Mouldy Aircond

Mould spores blown into your room by a contaminated aircond can trigger:

• Allergic reactions (sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes)
• Asthma attacks (especially in children)
• Respiratory infections
• Skin irritation
• Headaches and fatigue

If family members are getting sick more often since the smell appeared, get the aircond cleaned immediately.

How to Prevent Your Aircond from Smelling

  1. Run the fan for 10-15 minutes after turning off cooling. Most modern airconds have a "fan only" mode. Running the fan without cooling allows the evaporator coil to dry out, reducing moisture available for mould growth. Some units have an auto-dry function that does this automatically.
  2. Service your aircond every 3-4 months. Regular cleaning prevents biological growth from building up to the point where it causes smell. Think of it like brushing your teeth — regular maintenance prevents problems.
  3. Don't block the drain. Make sure the drain hose has a continuous downward slope and the outlet is clear. A blocked drain means standing water in the pan, which means smell.
  4. Control indoor humidity. If your home is particularly humid (ground floor, near a river, enclosed area), consider using the aircond's "dry" mode periodically to reduce moisture levels.
  5. Don't smoke indoors. Cigarette smoke gets embedded in the coil and filter and is extremely difficult to remove completely.

When to Call for Professional Help

Call a technician if:

We treated a particularly bad case in Shah Alam where a terrace house unit had been producing a sour smell for months. A chemical wash with anti-bacterial treatment solved it completely — read the full project report.

  • The smell persists after you've cleaned the filters
  • The smell is getting worse over time
  • Family members are developing respiratory symptoms
  • You can see visible mould on the vents or inside the unit
  • The smell is rotten or chemical rather than musty

We serve all of Shah Alam, KL, and Selangor for aircond cleaning and chemical wash services. Most jobs take 30-60 minutes per unit and the smell improvement is immediate.

Bottom Line

A bad-smelling aircond is your unit telling you it needs cleaning. In most cases, a standard cleaning or chemical wash will eliminate the smell completely. Don't cover it up with air freshener or just live with it — the mould and bacteria causing the smell are also affecting your indoor air quality and potentially your family's health.
