Buying an aircond is one thing — getting it properly installed is another. Installation costs can vary dramatically depending on the type of system, the complexity of the job, and where you are in KL/Selangor. Here's a comprehensive breakdown so you know exactly what to budget.

Wall-Mounted Aircond Installation Cost

Wall-mounted split units are the most common type in Malaysian homes. Here's what the installation typically includes and costs:

Standard Installation (RM250-450 per unit)

A "standard" installation assumes: the indoor and outdoor units are on the same wall or adjacent walls, the pipe run is under 5 metres, the outdoor unit is mounted on a wall bracket at the same level or one floor below, and existing electrical supply is available.

Ceiling Cassette Installation Cost

Ceiling cassette units are more complex to install. They require ceiling reinforcement, a ceiling opening, and more extensive piping.

• 2.0-3.0HP cassette (supply + install): RM4,500 - RM8,000
• 3.0-5.0HP cassette (supply + install): RM7,000 - RM12,000

Installation includes ceiling reinforcement brackets, ceiling opening work, piping, drainage, electrical connection, and commissioning. Ceiling repair/patching may be extra if not part of a renovation.

Ducted System Installation Cost

Supply vs Supply-and-Install Pricing

When getting quotes, make sure you're comparing like-for-like:

• Supply only: Just the aircond unit. You arrange installation separately. Cheaper upfront but risky if installers aren't experienced with the brand.
• Supply and install: Unit + professional installation as a package. Usually the better deal as the installer takes responsibility for both the product and the workmanship.

Hidden Costs to Watch For

1. No vacuum pump: Some budget installers skip vacuuming the refrigerant lines. This leaves moisture and air in the system, reducing efficiency and potentially damaging the compressor. Always confirm vacuum pump is included.
2. Thin copper pipes: Some installers use thinner-gauge copper to save cost. This reduces durability and can cause problems during gas charging.
3. No pressure testing: Proper installation includes a nitrogen pressure test to check for leaks before charging gas. Skipping this step means leaks may only show up weeks later.
4. Disposal of old units: If you're replacing old airconds, ask if the quote includes removal and disposal. This typically adds RM50-100 per unit.
